After three winter dome stays across BC and Alberta, we’ve noticed the same few items make the difference between a cozy night and an uncomfortable one — and a lot of “essential” packing list items turn out to be dead weight.
What actually mattered
Wool socks and a proper base layer topped the list every time, along with a headlamp for the walk from the parking area after dark. Most domes are heated well, but the walk in is often unlit.
“We packed snowshoes for two stays and used them once. We forgot a headlamp once and regretted it every night.”
What we didn’t need
Heavy sleeping bags were unnecessary at every property we’ve stayed at so far — the beds and heating were more than sufficient. Bulky boots were also overkill for short, cleared paths.
The one thing worth buying before you go
A small battery power bank. Several domes have limited outlets, and between phones, cameras, and drone batteries, we ran short more than once.
